857 - Sound reduction of hermetic rolling piston compressor

Abstract
The scheme of hermetic rolling piston compressor vibration and sound generation mechanism has been analyzed to understand complex inter-relationship between suction and discharge gas pulsations, mechanical forces, such as vane reciprocal movement, roller revolution, drive forces of the rotor rotation and electromagnetic forces of the electric motor. Some design modifications of the compressor have been developed to improve sound and vibration parameters. An improved muffler system for a rotary compressor assembly where the muffler is disposed within the compressor housing and a peripheral edge of the muffler abuts the interior surface of the housing in interference fit relationship. The compressor pump is attached to the muffler where the pump is substantially isolated from the housing. The muffler, the compressor pump and the compressor housing define a series of chambers in which noise generated by the compressor pump is dissipated. The test results of developed sound and vibration absorbing damper that helps reduce sound radiated by the compressor housing is also presented in the paper. The sound radiated by the mechanical friction between the crankshaft thrust surface and facing surface of the outboard bearing has been reduced by use of the special designed thrust bearing which has been located outside the cylinder block.
