132 - Silent block pavements as an alternative for SMA in urban situations
Siekmans A., van der Veen W.
Abstract
Traditionally, block pavements are very noisy. Relative to dense asphalt noise levels can be 5 dB(A) or more higher. This limits the application of block pavements in urban situations strongly where legal noise limits play an important role. As a result, many block pavements have been replaced by SMA. However, from the point of view of the city architect or with respect to maintainance of underlying contructions block pavements are preferable. Based on the latest insights in the mechanisms that cause traffic noise, silent block pavements have been developed that compare to SMA.
