Speech & Handwriting interfaces

This lecture will introduce to the students on the speech and handwriting intefaces.
The main part of the lecture is devoted to the speech interfaces, introducing the technologies related with speech recognition and synthesis by computers. We will study application cases for e-inclusion.

The following speech topics will be covered:
-The speech signal: generation and perception
-The speech signal: basic processing tools
   -Pattern recognition fundamentals for speech
   -Speech modeling
   -Speech synthesis
   -Speech recognition
   -Spoken dialog systems
   -Applications

The following handwriting topics will be covered:
-Offline printed and handwritten text recognition
   -Online handwritten text recognition
   -Multimodal handwritten text recognition
   -Applications

Project Work

There will be two set of project work proposals. One set will be focus on the speech & handwriting technologies and the other set of proposals will combine results of the speech & handwriting recognition project with natural language processing.

The goal is to implement a simple dialogue system that receives input as speech or handwriting, processes both the audio signal and the resultant text, and provides an answer that is fed into a speech synthesizer to produce an output. We will present specific project ideas that you may choose from.

A set of project will focus on the speech & handwriting technolgies and another set will focus on the text processing and answer generation part.

Handwriting project proposal:
This project consists on using the Microsoft Tablet PC tool in applications that use a stylus or gesture features. Components and utilities for Microsoft .NET languages are provided in the toolkit.

The student will learn how to use visual controls which allow drawing input, and how to configure and use
the Windows Handwriting Recognize for a writing recognition task.

More specifically, the project consists on improving a Sudoku game using ink user input to introduce numbers. Also more features such as configure the Recognizer  or adding new Ink capabilities will be provided.

Alquezar and Somontano vineyards

See the programme ...
Meeting point: Sunday 25th at 8:00 in the morning at the Paseo de Echegaray y Caballero, just at the Basilica del Pilar bus stop area.

The Medieval Township of Alquezar is found on the banks of the River Vero, practically in the centre of the province of Huesca, in the county of the Somontano of Barbastro. It is situated at an altitude of 660m on one of the sierras parallel to the Pyrenees mountain range, the "Sierra de Guara".

It is perfectly integrated into a striking landscape, headed all the while by the valley of the River Vero. The beauty of the village of Alquezar and its setting is such that, in 1990, the Government of Aragon was led to declare it “Nature Reserve of the Sierra and Canyons of Guara.”.

The wine region of Somontano lies at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains. The name Somontano actually means "Under the Mountain". The region is gorgeous with green fields and hills, wildflowers, medieval hamlets, and lonely hilltop monasteries. The principal wine town is Barbastro, with most of the wineries close by. The climate in this part of Spain is continental with snowy winters and hot summer months, and extremely sudden changes in temperature when the seasons change.
