Digital Subscriber Lines: Simulation Techniques and Standard DevelopmentWalter Y. ChenDSL is the next wave in communications technology designed to provide very high speed transactions over regular telephone lines. Far surpassing current modems in its wake, DSL is destined to become telephone companies solution to high speed networking and multimedia digital communications for the mass market. Technical details of different flavors of DSLs are revealed such that more researchers and engineers can be involved with the deployment and further development of this high throughput digital communications technology. Includes reliable channel and noise model for the telephone subscriber loop. With detailed calculation examples for different transmission environments and relevant signal processing algorithms. Deals with both theoretical and implementation aspects of the technology. Covers all currently developed and developing DSL technologies. It is projected that the deployment of DSL will reach millions of lines in the next a few years. DSL will become as common as the voice band modem and many of us has the chance of further enhance its performance since the channel capacity of telephone subscriber loop has not been approached by current DSL technologies yet. The tutorial will be presented in three parts:
Schedule permitting, a second print of the book: "DSL: simulation techniques and standards development" can be available at the publisher's cost. About the Tutorial SpeakerDr. Walter Y. Chen is the author of the recently published text book: "DSL: Simulation Techniques and Standards Development." Dr. Chen has been involved with the development of Digital Subscriber Line technologies since 1989. As a research scientist at Bellcore, Dr. Chen was involved with the simulation study and development of HDSL and ADSL technologies for related standards. Dr. Chen had helped the development of DSL projects at Texas Instruments during 1995-1997. Currently, Dr. Chen is a Technical Director at Motorola continuing the further development of DSL technologies. Dr. Chen is a summa cum laude graduate of the Polytechnic Institute of New York. He received an M.S. degree in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic University of New York. < Return to overview of Tutorials.
