Welcome

On behalf of the Institute for Mechanics of Materials and Structures of the Vienna University of Technology and of the Acoustics Research Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, it is our great pleasure to welcome you in Vienna at the Thirteenth International Congress on Sound and Vibration (ICSV13).

The previous ICSVs were held in the USA (1990, 1992, and 2002), Russia (1996 and 2004), Canada (1994), Australia (1997), Denmark (1999), Germany (2000), Hong Kong (2001), Sweden (2003), and Portugal (2005). ICSV13 provides a first-rate scientific programme. The congress is organised under the auspices of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (IIAV), an international non-profit scientific society affiliated with the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM).

Vienna is well known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere and its reputation as one of the world’s leading convention venues. A climate of openness and understanding makes Vienna a successful backdrop for meetings as diverse as superpower summits, technical symposia, corporate conventions, and major specialized conferences and congresses at an international level. Vienna offers many attractive cultural possibilities. In 2006, the 250th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s birth is celebrated. Exhibitions and concerts take place throughout the year. Special events are also scheduled during ICSV13 when, for instance, the Vienna Mozart Orchestra performs at the Musikverein’s Hall, which is famous for its outstanding acoustics and the Vienna New Year’s Concert.

More than 1000 abstracts related to all areas of sound and vibrations have been submitted to ICSV13 by authors from 57 countries around the world. All abstracts were reviewed by the organisers of the structured sessions and by members of the scientific committee. The accepted abstracts are published in this Book of Abstracts, and most of the respective full papers are included in the accompanying ICSV13 CD-ROM proceedings. The organisers thank the authors for submitting their contributions and the reviewers for their unselfish cooperation.

The scientific programme of ICSV13 consists of 7 plenary keynote lectures, 40 structured sessions, and 28 regular sessions with 3 to 47 contributions in each session. The last number refers to the most popular regular session RS03 “Active Noise and Vibration Control”. In total, more than 950 presentations will be given by approximately 870 participants, making ICSV13 the largest congress in the series of ICSVs.

The chairmen of ICSV13 would like to thank Malcom J. CROCKER and his assistant Renata GALLYAMOVA for their continuous energetic support during preparation of the congress. They are also thankful to the organisers of the structured sessions for inviting many colleagues to contribute to ICSV13 and for the excellent preparation of their sessions. The chairs want to acknowledge the productive cooperation with the congress management “Mondial Congress”. Furthermore, they want to express their gratitude to Martina PÖLL for her invaluable and indispensable support at all stages of the organisation of ICSV13. Last but not least, they wish to thank the Secretary General of ICSV13, Holger WAUBKE, for his great efforts with respect to the scientific programme.

We hope you will enjoy your stay in Vienna!
