ICASSP 2019

Welcome from the General Chair

ICASSP 2019 is the forty-fourth edition of the IEEE Signal Processing Society’s flagship Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing. This is the second ICASSP in the UK, returning on exactly the 30th anniversary of the first one which took place in Glasgow.

We are delighted to welcome you to Brighton for this exquisite global gathering of signal processing enthusiasts in this vibrant city.

From visiting iconic tourist attractions to chilling out on the beach front, Brighton offers a wealth of things to do and places to explore, combining the energy of the city with the open horizon of the sea. Explore the stunning heritage of the Royal Pavilion and other architectural features, relax on Brighton Pier and enjoy the Brighton Wheel as well as the famous pebble beach - Brighton offers something for every taste.

Brighton is rated by Lonely Planet as one of the best 10 Beach Cities in the World. Each May the city hosts the Brighton Festival, the largest arts festival in England. The city is just 30 minutes from London’s Gatwick Airport.

This year we expect to receive over 2500 participants. This shows how the conference has grown from 600 participants in its first edition in Philadelphia in 1976. What a ride this has been!

The theme of ICASSP 2019 - “Signal Processing: Empowering Science and Technology for Humankind” – is echoing the impact of our research community on society as a whole.

ICASSP 2019 has a number of new features. These include publishing the papers in IEEE Xplore before the conference, creating new technical tracks, and supporting the participation of students in the conference tutorials. The SP Cup, Student Career Luncheon, Young Professional Development Workshop, Author Ethics and New Author Tools Workshop, as well as the Women in Signal Processing Meeting are some other compelling highlights of the conference.

This year’s meeting is underpinned by five distinguished plenary talks presented by eminent scientists in the hottest areas of signal processing. Professor Sir David John Spiegelhalter from University of Cambridge talks about Handling Uncertainty. Professor Corinna Cortes from Google portrays the alluring advances and applications in Machine Learning at Google. Professor Mischa Dohler from King’s College London discusses the vision, technology and building blocks of the emerging Internet of Skills such as 5G. Professor John Treichler, who is this year’s Wiener Award winner, elaborates on diverse applied signal processing techniques. Finally, Professor Herman Ney, from RWTH Aachen University of Technology, Germany, takes us on a journey from statistical decision theory to deep learning for automatic speech recognition.

Furthermore, 11 tutorial sessions and 30 special sessions will cater for all tastes in signal processing.

We wish to acknowledge the dedicated contributions of all members of the Organising Committee. Special thanks go to our Technical Chairs, Profs. Cichocki, Djuric, and Mandic for doing a tremendous job in setting up the conference programme and to the Finance Chair Dr Cheong-Took for taking care of all the details in finance, administration and communications. Further thanks are due to our Plenary Chairs; Profs. Chambers, Cvetkovic and Li, Special Sessions Chairs; Profs. Godsill and Weiss; Tutorial Chairs; Profs. Bull, Naylor and Plumbley, and the rest of Organising Committee. We are very grateful to CMS for their sterling handling of registrations and submissions, BCD for local arrangements, In Patch Solutions for web design, Brighton & Hove Council for the venue and accommodation facilitation, and last but not least, for the cheerful and proficient coordination of all the actions by Caroline Johnson and Nicole Allen from the IEEE SPS throughout our journey.
