Title: Speech Interface for Mobile Communication

Abstract: This speech presents some aspects for speech interface used in mobile environments. In Japan, trial and regular services with speech interfaces have already been launched, but they seems to be little used. Firstly, this reason is analyzed and some problems for Automatic Speech recognition (ASR) in mobile environments are cleared. In addition to technical ones, social and cultural ones are important. Secondly, research and development for solving these problems are presented with the steps for introducing ASR to commercial systems. Finally, picking up the mobile internet service "i-mode (NTT DoCoMo)", more details of ASR introduction to mobile services are given.

Curriculum: Hirotaka Nakano is an Associate Senior Vice President of the Multimedia Laboratories of NTT DoCoMo, Inc., where he is currently in charge of mobile multimedia communication research and development. He received his B.D, M.D and Ph. D. degree from University of Tokyo in 1972, 1974 and 1977 respectively. Consecutively he joined Communications Laboratories of NTT Public Corporation (which was changed to NTT Laboratories in 1985) and had been engaged in research and development of picture and video information systems such as Videotex systems (Character and pattern based image-DB system) and video-on demand (VOD) systems. He is also interested in image input, processing and retrieval architecture for those systems.
